Covered California Open Enrollment 2018

It is that time of year again! October 15th officially kicked off Covered California Open Enrollment 2018. This means you can either choose to continue into 2019 with your current plan, or you can look at your options and decide on a completely new plan. You can stick with the same insurance company or pick a new one. You can even upgrade or downgrade your coverage.

If you have not been happy with your current plan, then you have the option of checking out other options. For most of the year, you’re only allowed to enroll or change your health plan if you have a good excuse, otherwise known as a “Qualifying Event.” For example: marriage or divorce, moving into a new area, losing your health insurance, or having a new baby. During Covered California Open Enrollment 2018, anyone can enroll or change health insurance plans even without a “Qualifying Event”!

If you’ve been totally happy with your current plan, no worries! There’s nothing you need to do. You will automatically re-enroll into the same plan for next year. But be careful – a lot of plans have raised their rates for 2019. You may want to look into options and make sure you get the best deal.

New Plan Dates for Covered California

The day your new policy begins will completely depend upon the date you complete your application. The earliest anyone will receive new coverage when applying will be January 1, 2019. • Enroll Between Oct 15th – Dec 15th: Plan starts Jan 1st
• Enroll Between Dec 16th – Jan 15th: Plan starts Feb 1st

This means that in the event of an emergency, you will not be covered until the new plan goes into effect. Thankfully, there are options to cover that gap! You can enroll in short-term coverage through a healthcare-sharing ministry like Aliera Care. You can also enroll in a supplemental plan that will help cover big medical events while you don’t have regular insurance.
